Hameln (Hamelin, population 60,000) is the economic, cultural and tourist centre of the Weser Mountain area. The legend of the Pied Piper has made Hameln world-famous. Yet the city's wealth stems from its convenient location as a trading centre on the river Weser. Such economic prosperity resulted in splendidly decorated houses. Tight rows of buildings in Weser Renaissance style can be admired here. One event well worth seeing from mid-May to mid-September: every Sunday at noon the legend of the Pied Piper is performed as an open-air play by some 80 actors dressed in historic costumes.
