Guided Tour through the Royal Gardens in Herrenhausen

Tour of the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen (Great Garden and/or Berggarten)

Duration: approx. 1.5 hours, in German or other languages

Stroll pleasurably through the Great Garden, the best-preserved of all baroque gardens, with its history going back over 300 years. You will find inspiration in the “Grand Parterre” with its filigree patterns of box edgings, marble chippings and colourful flowerbeds. Paths laid out in geometrical form lead you to numerous points of interest.
One particular attraction is the Grotto, newly fitted out to the designs of the artist Niki de Saint Phalle. The three rooms of the Grotto, with their magnificently colourful mosaics of stained glass and mirror fragments, their pebbles and numerous painted sculptures, symbolise “human life”. The Berggarten is no less worth seeing. This botanical garden is celebrated for its unique collection of plants from all over the world. Even frequent visitors are thrilled again and again by one of the biggest and most diverse permanent exhibitions of orchids in the world, and by the display houses for cactuses and other tropical plants. The Georgengarten, the third component of the Herrenhausen Gardens with a charm all of its own, is a landscape garden laid out in the old English style.
