Braunschweig - The City of Henry the Lion
Braunschweig (Brunswick) is the ideal location for all those who want to complement a city trip by tours through an interesting cultural region.
In the region around the city of Henry the Lion, over one hundred Romanesque-style sights can be found. The city, population 250,000, is situated on the southern edge of the Lüneburg Heath, in the northern foothills of the Harz, less than 40 miles from Hannover with its international airport. Braunschweig's townscape today, with its numerous squares and churches of the former municipal boroughs (Altstadt/old town, Hagen, Sack, Altewiek and Neustadt) is still characterised by its medieval structure. In particular, the Burgplatz with the Dom St. Blasii (St. Blasius Cathedral) and Romanesque-style Dankwarderode Castle, surrounded by an ensemble of half-timbered houses, are worth seeing.
