Hameln - City of the Legendary Pied Piper

Hameln (Hamelin; population 60,000) is the economic, cultural and touristic centre of the Weser Mountain area. The legend of the Pied Piper made Hameln world-famous. Yet the city's wealth stems from its convenient location as a trading centre on the river Weser. Such economic prosperity resulted in splendidly decorated houses. Buildings in Weser Renaissance style in tight rows can be admired here, for example the Rattenfängerhaus ("Rat Catcher House") of 1602 with an inscription about the children's procession, the Dempterhaus of 1607 and the Leisthaus of 1558.

Worth the experience: from mid-May to mid-September, the legend of the Pied Piper is performed as an open-air play every Sunday at 12 o'clock by approx. 80 actors in historic costumes.
