Worth Seeing in Hildesheim
Located 30 miles south of Hannover, Hildesheim has been a cultural centre between the Harz and the Lüneburg Heath for over 1,000 years. Of the city's five Romanesque churches, the Dom (cathedral) and the Michaeliskirche (church), as examples of the art sponsored by Bishop Bernward, are "UNESCO World Heritage of Humanity". Internationally famous works of art from the Ottonian era are the particularly precious objects in the sacral collections of the Dom-Museum and the treasury of the Dom. At the Roemer and Pelizaeus Museum, fascinating collections of ancient Egyptian and ancient Peruvian art can be seen.
The historic market square is one of the most beautiful old markets in Germany. Its special highlight is the reconstructed "Knochenhauer-Amtshaus" (former butchers' guild hall), where hospitality and city history are combined under one roof.
