Worth Seeing in Wolfenbüttel

For more than four centuries, Wolfenbüttel was the residence of the dukes of Brunswick and Lüneburg. As the first Renaissance town in the north, Wolfenbüttel had its peak during the Baroque age. It is thanks to the peace-loving dukes that, up to the present day, Wolfenbüttel is famous as the "city of intellectual life and the fine arts". They created the townscape still in existence today, with more than 600 half-timbered houses, the palace and further splendid churches and buildings. The ones considered to be highlights are the Herzog August Library - once praised as the Eighth Wonder, the place of work of Lessing and Leibniz, nowadays an international research establishment – and the main church Hauptkirche Beatae Mariae Virginis, the country's first large post-reformation church building.
